Microsoft Excel Tip: Alternate Row Shading
Are you going cross-eyed from looking at detailed Excel spreadsheets? Does one row run right into the next? There are ways that you can make these sheets easier to read – one method is alternate row shading. Not to be confused with the automatic table formatting, alternate row shading is generated by a formula. The steps outlined below are for Excel 2007.
1. Highlight the cells you would like to shade alternately
2. At the Home tab in Excel, click on “Conditional Formatting” and then “New Rule”
3. Click on “Use a formula to determine which cells to format”
4. Click in the “Format values” field and enter this formula (copy and paste this): =MOD(ROW(),2)=0
5. Click on the “Format” button and then click on the “Fill” tab – select the color of shading for every other row
6. Click on the “OK” button twice. If you followed the steps correctly, you should see alternate row shading in your spreadsheet.
7. If you’re having trouble, just email me!
